Weaver Vale Liberal Democrat candidate Peter Hampson has launched his election campaign in Frodsham

A PARLIAMENTARY hopeful to the Weaver Vale thrown has launched his election campaign focusing on transport, regeneration and development.

Liberal Democrat candidate Peter Hampson, who at 23 years old is vying to become the youngest MP in Parliament, has been meeting voters in Frodsham and Helsby, stealing a march on his opposition.

I have been going around and talking to people, leafleting through doors,” said Peter, who is balancing his campaign with working full time for the Co-operative bank in Stockport.

The way things have developed the field seems to have opened right up and nationally too I think.

I have both local and national issues in mind, but first you have to be a good constituency MP and I intend to follow in the footsteps Mike Hall has made and have the same relationship with the electorate.

Mike did an awful lot for the region and I would hope to emulate that and also do a lot more on a national level, raise more issues in parliament.”

Peter, who is also a Weaverham parish councillor, studied law and economics at Aberystwyth University before completing a post graduate degree in legal practice.

Despite his comparatively young years he has already stood for election as a county councillor and spent reading weeks and holidays in the corridors of power at the House of Commons.

“Iam focusing on regeneration of the local area and the economy, I will lobby for more funding and development in Weaver Vale.

I will campaign for better public transport. If you are under 18 travel in the area can be quite expensive and they aren’t the best services.

The boundary commissions review will be key for Frodsham and Helsby and I believe each area should have their own councillor to focus on issues in their area.”

WEAVERHAM Parish Council has welcomed its youngest ever member.

It is hoped the appointment of 23-year-old Peter Hampson will help the council reconnect with the younger residents.

The former Weaverham Forest Primary School and Weaverham High School pupil has just been announced as the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Weaver Vale, but he said he also hopes to make a real difference at a local level.

The Wallerscote Road resident said: “This is a great opportunity for me to give something back to the village."

“I got so much out of growing up in Weaverham, it’s somewhere that I really care about. My main interests for the area will be regeneration and building the link between the parish council and the younger residents of the village."

“I think a lot of the younger ones are disillusioned by local politics, so I would like to help build bridges and get more youth projects going."

“I’m also a big environmentalist, so I would like to look at perhaps making Weaverham greener."

“I’ve been watching closely what they have been doing over at Ashton Hayes in making it the first carbon-neutral village, so maybe something similar could work here.”

Clr Hampson joined St Mary’s Church as a bell ringer at the tender age of 11, before leaving to study law and economics at the University of Aberystwyth. He then traveled the world, before taking a job behind the bar at the White Barn, in Cuddington.

Parish council chairman, Clr Pam Shingler, said everyone was thrilled to welcome him. She said: “We are delighted with his appointment – it is a wonderful thing for us to have this young man.

“He is young and will probably identify with a lot of young people in the village. “But obviously he is the Liberal Democrat candidate, so we just hope that he won’t be whisked away from us too early.”
